Veterans Affairs Policy

Trinity College is approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) State Approving Agency for the training of qualified veterans under Title 38 of the U.S. Code. If you are planning to use the Illinois Veterans' Grant, you will not be able to use it at Trinity—only state schools are eligible for this grant. National Guard service people/veterans should contact their Benefits Coordinator or Education Officer to determine what steps are needed to begin receiving benefits through Trinity. The Records Office supports veterans' processing at the University. Each semester the Trinity VA Certifying Official will submit the students' enrollment status to the VA for GI Bill benefits.

In order to receive VA benefits, each student must establish Trinity as the university of attendance. To initiate VA processing and enrollment certification, new or transfer students must contact the Trinity VA Certifying Official in the Records Office at 847.317.7052/7050, or by email veterans@tiu.edu. The following information is required in order to process your benefits through Trinity:

a) copy of your DD-214 (notice of Honorable Discharge) if you are not on active duty.

b) For first time education benefits users, a copy of your education benefits award letter (if you have already received one) or an Application for Education Benefits Form to begin your benefits (we can provide this form for you).

Additionally, students need to be aware that in order to receive benefits, there are recent VA policy changes requiring your attention. Besides notifying TIU of VA eligibility and to certify your enrollment with the VA, "all students who are receiving either the Montgomery GI BILL Active duty or Selected Reserve must now verify their enrollments monthly to receive payments. This verification can be done either by using the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) application on the VA web site (http://www.gibill.va.gov/) or by using the automated telephone system (IVR) at 1-877-823-2378 and follow the prompts.”
