DE 5320 The Pastoral Epistles

Course Description
This course is an expository study of 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus, with emphasis on interpretive problems, the theological and practical relevance of the Pastorals for society and the church, and church leadership. Three hours.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, the student should be able to:
- Understand the special introductory problems of the Pastoral Epistles, particularly Pauline authorship.
- Enter sympathetically into the life and work of the author and his friends and coworkers.
- Appreciate the special relevance of the Pastoral Epistles for Christian faith and conduct, especially in church life.
- Demonstrate interpretative skills by wrestling with difficulties in the text.
- Identify ways of applying the lessons of the Pastoral Epistles to contemporary Christian life, both corporately and individually.

The student should read the textbook in accordance with the lectures. Because there are two papers required for this course, the student will be engaging in a large amount of reading from the bibliography. Therefore, this will be the only required textbook.
